Lids and Discourteous Operators
One of the most frustrating aspects of operating as a DX station is the plethora of discourteous operators. Some sound as if it is a life-or-death matter to make the exchange and get the DX station in the log. And while the country will remain unnamed, I soon formed an opinion as to which country had the most discourteous operators, both in quantity and quality.
The first impulse of a DX station is to ignore the lid who persists in calling on top of the station you are working or uses any of many other tactics to overpower or dominate the frequency. Unfortunately, these stations also always seem to be running high power. So, the next impulse is to work the lid to get rid of him (I've never encountered a female lid). However, that isn't fair to all the stations who are playing by the rules AND only encourages others to adopt the same tactics. So, I resorted to trying to warn individual stations about their conduct and the possible consequences.
One particular station, from the country to remain unnamed, was so obnoxious that I told him I would work him but he would never receive a QSL card if he persisted in his tactics. To his credit, he fell in line with the others and I worked him in turn. On another day there were a number of high power lids fighting each other for the contact and making a mess out of the frequency. After trying to sort through the chaos for a brief period, I simply went to another band and left them there to shout at each other.
The short of it is....treat the DX station and all your fellow Amateurs on the frequency with the utmost courtesy. Remember, chasing DX is a hobby and should be a pleasant experience for all.
